Which IPTV Player App Should You Use?
The app decides how your subscription looks and how it activates. Here is what runs on each platform, and which one to pick.
Your subscription and your player app are two different things. We supply the subscription. The player is a separate app, made by an independent developer, and it is the part you actually look at every day.
That distinction matters because the apps differ more than people expect. Some are free and some charge a one-time fee to their developer. Some you activate yourself by typing in a server address, while others show an ID that you send us and we do the rest. And several of the best known ones do not run on Samsung or LG at all, which is the single most common reason a setup stalls before it starts.
There are three things worth comparing: what it costs, how it activates, and whether it runs on the device you own. The last one is the fastest way to narrow the list, so start there.
Start with your platform
Find your device, then read only the apps listed next to it. Every one of them plays the same channels at the same quality, so this is a question of fit rather than of better and worse.

The four apps
Each one below plays the same channels from the same subscription. What changes is the interface, what it costs, and how it is switched on.
TiviMate
Best for Fire TV and Android TV
The most configurable of the four. It has the most detailed programme guide, proper favourites, multiple profiles and the cleanest navigation once it is set up. If you watch a lot and want the interface arranged your way, this is the one people stay on.
You enter your own details, so nothing is activated for you. There is a free version that covers the basics and an optional paid tier from its own developer, which is separate from your ErsatzTV subscription and paid to them rather than to us.
It also has the best recording and multi-view support of the four, which matters if you follow more than one thing at once. Those are the features its paid tier unlocks.
Not available on Samsung, LG, iPhone or iPad. It is a Fire TV and Android app only. If a guide tells you to install it on a Samsung TV, that guide is wrong about the platform.
IBO Player Pro
Best for Samsung and LG, and the easiest anywhere
Opens straight to a Device ID and key. You send us those, we register them, and the app is ready when you reopen it. You never type a server address, a username or a password, which on a TV remote is the difference between two minutes and twenty.
The interface is modern and closest to what people expect from a mainstream streaming app, and it has been the most stable of the four in our experience. It charges a one-time fee to its developer.
Its programme guide is good rather than exceptional, and it has no recording. For most households neither is missed, and the setup time it saves is the trade that usually wins.
It is the app we recommend by default to anyone setting up IPTV for the first time, on any device.
ELK Player
A lighter alternative that runs almost everywhere
Activates the same way as IBO Player Pro. The app shows a Device ID or a MAC address, you send it to us, and we do the registration. Nothing to type, same as above.
What sets it apart is weight. It is lighter than the others, which makes it the one to try when the hardware is a few years old and a heavier interface has started to feel slow. It also charges a one-time developer fee.
The interface is plainer than IBO's and it has fewer settings than TiviMate, which is the point. Less running in the background is exactly what an older device needs.
Runs on Fire TV, Samsung, LG, Android and Apple, which makes it the most portable choice if you have a mix of devices in the house.
IPTV Smarters
The free option
Free on every platform it supports, with nothing to pay beyond your subscription. You log in yourself using the server URL, username and password we send you, so setup is in your hands from start to finish.
The trade is features and polish. The programme guide is more basic than TiviMate's, the interface is plainer, and there is no one-time unlock because there is nothing to unlock. For a second TV or a device you use occasionally, that is usually the right trade.
It is also the one to reach for when you want to test something quickly, since there is no fee to weigh up and no activation to wait on from our side.
Available on Fire TV, Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Mac. Availability on Samsung and LG varies by model year.
How activation differs
This is the difference that actually changes your afternoon, and it splits the four apps cleanly in half.
You type it in
TiviMate and IPTV Smarters
We send a server URL, a username and a password. You enter them once in the app and save. You keep full control and can add a second playlist yourself later, at the cost of typing a long address on a remote, which is where most first-time setups go wrong.
We activate it
IBO Player Pro and ELK Player
The app shows an ID as soon as it opens. You send it to us on WhatsApp, a photo of the screen is enough, we register it and you reopen the app. There is nothing to type and nothing to mistype, but the activation goes through us rather than being self-serve.
Neither model is better in the abstract. On a TV remote the second is noticeably faster, and on a phone or a computer the first is barely an inconvenience.
About the developer fees
IBO Player Pro and ELK Player charge a small one-time fee. That money goes to the app's developer, not to us. These are independent apps, we have no commercial relationship with the people who make them, and the fee is theirs rather than a charge from us.
IPTV Smarters is free, and TiviMate's free tier covers ordinary use. So on Fire TV, Android, Windows, Mac and Apple you can run this without paying anything beyond your subscription if you want to.
Samsung and LG are the exception. There is no reliable free player on those platforms, so the fee is difficult to avoid there. If that bothers you, a Fire TV Stick plugged into the same TV opens up the free options and usually runs faster than the TV's own interface as well.
Now install it
Once you have picked one, the install differs by platform and each has its own guide. Follow the one that matches your device rather than a generic set of steps.

One thing worth knowing before you start: if playback stutters after you are set up, changing app is not the answer. our buffering guide diagnoses that. It is a network problem rather than an app problem, and switching player will not fix it.
